Why invest in a propane-powered fleet?

Economics: Save 40%

Improve your bottom line. A gallon of propane autogas generally costs 40 percent less than a gallon of gasoline. Switching to autogas can save fleets thousands of dollars annually over traditional gasoline or diesel fleets.

Emissions: 70% less smog

Breath easier. Compared to gasoline and diesel engines, propane autogas produces less harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Propane autogas shrinks your environmental footprint with 70 percent fewer smog-producing hydrocarbons, 50 percent less carbon monoxide, 20 percent less nitrogen oxide, and 12 percent less carbon dioxide.

Domestic Production: Made in America

Reduce reliance on foreign fuels. The abundant domestic supply of propane autogas reduces U.S. reliance on imported fuels, increases energy security and creates American jobs. Long-term supply has been greatly increased due to recent advances in drilling techniques.

Performance

Propane has the longest driving range of any alternative fuel option. Due to higher octane ratings and efficient combustion, propane autogas exhibits outstanding performance.

  • Horsepower and torque of propane autogas is greater than or equal to its gasoline equivalent.
  • Propane enhances performance by providing a 104 octane rating, compared to regular gasoline’s rating of 87.

Safety

Propane’s low working pressure, narrow flammability range, higher ignition temperature and rigorous testing make it a very safe alternative fuel.

  • Propane has a narrower flammability range than compressed natural gas.
  • Propane vehicle tanks have a working pressure of 312 psi. Natural gas tanks have a working pressure of 3,600 psi.
  • Propane vehicle tanks are 20 times more puncture resistant than gasoline or diesel tanks and are tested at up to four times their normal operating pressure.

Infrastructure

Propane autogas has the most developed refueling infrastructure of all alternative fuels in the U.S. and the number of new stations is quickly expanding.

  • The number of propane autogas refueling stations across the nation has risen to more than 2,600, and is rapidly increasing.
  • As a fleet operator, you have the flexibility to install your own refueling site. At an average cost of $40,000 you could build nearly 30 sites for the cost of only one compressed natural gas station. Some propane fuel providers even offer no-cost infrastructure with a fuel contract.

Propane vs. CNG

Download a fact sheet on CNG vs. LPG

Propane autogas and compressed natural gas (CNG) are not comparable when it comes to the bottom line. Do you know which is better? The answer can make a big difference to your fleet operations.

When compared to traditional vehicle fuels, propane and CNG are both attractive propositions. The differences are in the details:

  • The cost of converting a vehicle to run on propane is 50 percent less than the cost of converting a vehicle to CNG.
  • The cost of implementing a propane refueling station is generally one-tenth of the cost of a comparable CNG station.
  • Based on the electricity required to store and pump the fuel, a propane station's environmental footprint is one tenth of a CNG station's.
  • Propane storage tanks are four times smaller than CNG tanks for comparable amounts of fuel.
  • A propane tank's operating pressure is 17 times less than the pressure of a CNG tank.
  • Unlike CNG, propane is not a greenhouse gas and therefore does not contribute to planetary warming trends when released directly into the atmosphere.
